Language Family Definition and Examples

Language Family Definition and Examples A language family is a lot of dialects getting from a typical progenitor or parent. Dialects with a noteworthy number of normal highlights in phonology, morphology, and sentence structure are said to have a place with a similar language family. Developments of a language family are called branches. English, alongside the greater part of the other significant dialects of Europe, has a place with the Indo-European language family. The Number of Language Families Worldwide It is evaluated that there are in excess of 250 built up language families on the planet, and more than 6,800 unmistakable dialects, a considerable lot of which are undermined or jeopardized. (Keith Brown and Sarah Ogilvie, Concise Encyclopedia of Languages of the World. Elsevier Science, 2008) The Size of a Language Family The quantity of dialects that make up a language family fluctuates significantly. The biggest African family, Niger-Congo, is evaluated to comprise of around 1,000 dialects and a few fold the number of vernaculars. However there are numerous dialects that don't give off an impression of being identified with some other. These single-part language families are alluded to as language disconnects. The Americas have been more etymologically expanded than different landmasses; the quantity of Native American language families in North America has been decided to be more than 70, including more than 30 segregates. (Zdenä›k Salzmann, Language, Culture, and Society: An Introduction to Linguistic Anthropology. Westview Press, 2007) Catolog of Language Families The site ethnologue.com lists the universes 6,909 known living dialects. It records the significant language families and their individuals and tells where they are spoken. The quantity of speakers of these dialects shifts from the several millions whose local tongue is English or Standard Chinese to the generally little populaces who talk a portion of the quickly vanishing American Indian dialects. (C. M. Millward and Mary Hayes, A Biography of the English Language, third ed. Wadsworth, 2012) Levels of Classification Notwithstanding the thought of language family, language characterization presently utilizes a progressively intricate scientific categorization. At the top we have the classification of a phylum, for example a language bunch which is random to some other gathering. The following lower level of order is that of a (language) stock, a gathering of dialects having a place with various language families which are remotely identified with one another. Language family stays a focal thought, underscoring the inward connections between the individuals from such a family. (Renã © Dirven and Marjolyn Verspoor, Cognitive Exploration of Language and Linguistics. John Benjamins, 2004) The Indo-European Language Family Indo-European (IE) is the best-contemplated language family on the planet. For a great part of the previous 200 years more researchers have dealt with the near philology of IE than on the various regions of etymology set up. We find out about the history and connections of the IE dialects than about some other gathering of dialects. For certain parts of IEGreek, Sanskrit, and Indic, Latin and Romance, Germanic, Celticwe are blessed to have records stretching out more than at least two centuries, and phenomenal insightful assets, for example, sentence structures, word references and content versions that outperform those accessible for about all non-IE dialects. The recreation of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) and the chronicled improvements of the IE dialects have thusly given the system to much research on other language families and on recorded etymology when all is said in done. SIPASA COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog

SIPASA COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Anesa Diaz-Uda, a second-year MPA student contributed the following post. _____________________ The SIPA education extends beyond the classroom, and students can find a plethora of student groups and extracurricular activities to meet their many interests and passions.   The student group charged with overseeing these forums and events is the SIPA Student Association (SIPASA). “SIPASA represents the diverse interests of students on a school-wide basis. It serves as a liaison between the student body and administration and enhances the quality of life of the SIPA student body through the promotion of social activities which occur during orientation and throughout the year. Moreover, SIPASA supports student initiatives sponsored by other groups at SIPA, promotes community outreach, and represents the student body in regard to curriculum issues through the Committee on Instruction, semi-annual town meetings, and semi-annual open forums.” Some of the work the Board is most proud of accomplishing this year is: improvements at Alice’s Café on the 6th floor of IAB â€" namely a greater variety of food with more vegetarian options; a very efficient and transparent budget process for student groups; the removal of computers from the 6th floor lounge to create more social space for students; and the adoption of the new email addresses for all students (ie. jdoe2010@sipa.columbia.edu). My SIPA experience has been thoroughly enriched by my involvement in SIPASA.   This past year I was the MPA Internal Affairs Chair, and in this role I acted as basically the manager of SIPASA.   I won’t lie, it was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun.   My tasks were as diverse as: meeting with various deans regarding student life; coordinating locker sales for students; assisting in the planning of orientation; helping throw parties for the student body; and most recently running elections for the incoming board.

Christopher Phelps’ Introduction states, â€Å"As a metaphor, ‘jungle’ denoted the ferocity of dog-eat-dog competition, the barbarity of exploitative work, the wilderness of urban life, the savagery of poverty, the crudity of political corruption, and the primitiveness of the doctrine of survival of the fittest, which led people to the slaughter as surely as cattle.†(1), this is the foundation to Sinclair’s arguments that capitalism promotes competition between the working-class for mere survival all the while destroying human rights†¦show more content†¦Though not specifically promoting socialism with animalistic terms, through condemning capitalism the author shows socialism as the far superior choice and one that wo uld be most beneficial to the reader. Furthermore, the quotation begins with capitalism linking directly to the Beef Trust and the protagonist, Jurgis, coming to the realization through educating himself with the socialist literature. This is especially significant since at the beginning of the novel, the newcomers were portrayed as unsophisticated in the eyes of capitalism. Now the reader has been exposed to the idea that these people were not insolent but merely oppressed by a capitalistic environment. Australian Law Livestock Companies

Question: Describe about the Australian Law for Livestock Companies. Answer: 1. Issue: The current case discusses about the issue relating to lease agreement. After concluding this assignment we would come to know what happens when anyone backs out after signing the lease agreement. This case is about a company named as MOO, a livestock company. Company wanted to expand its business so it was considering opening a branch office in Ballarat. The entire responsibility relating to this was given to Tom who was a business development manager in the company. Even his name and role was prominently displayed on the company website as on business cards and stationery. Company had assign Tom to go to Ballarat to enquire on retail locations available to let and then report back to head office with a recommendation. So after reaching Ballarat Tom had evaluated several places which belong to competitors and available premises. After verifying various places Tom had finalized a place which was owned by Bob. The land finalized by Tom had the heritage look and feel and was a central location of a particular vacant retail premises. According to him this location was the best suited location for the company. Hence Tom had signed a lease agreement with Bob on behalf of his company. But the problem was when the agreement was sent to the company via mail then company refused to acknowledge the lease agreement. This was not correct from the part of the company since Tom had already signed the agreement. Now Bob wants to take legal action against the company since first companys Business Development Manager had signed the agreement and the company refuses to acknowledge the agreement. Rules: As per Section90 of the Leases Act 2001, tenant has the right to terminate the lease by giving a minimum thirty days notice. In the following situations tenant can terminate the lease:(Austliieduau, 2016) If the premises, building containing the premises has been damaged in material way. If either the lessor has refused to repair the damage or the lessor unreasonably departs from or takes no reasonable action in relation to the premises. The condition of the premises is so bad that it cannot be used by the lessee with the reasonable time or a period which should not be more than a year. As per Agency Act 2003, a person has the right to carry on the business as a real estate agent if he provides a real estate service for a principal for reward. If any money is received by a license agent as bond under this act then would not be considered as trust money. When a principal is not present in the scenario then an agent has all the rights to take decisions on behalf of the principal. In such situations agents act as a proxy for the principal. all the powers which lies with the principal will also be applicable in the case where an agent deals on his behalf. Then the decisions taken by the agent would be considered as final. (Actgovau, 2016) Application: the provisions of the Agency Act 2003 needs to be applied in this case. In the given case Tom was assigned a job to finalize a new place for their office in Ballarat. He had done his job correctly by finding a good location for the office. The place finalized by him was of Bobs. The place had a heritage look and feel and had a central location of a vacant retail premises. Tom was a Business Development Manager of the company, which means he has the right to take decisions on behalf of the company. His name and role was also mentioned in the website of the company, this shows that he was in the top most position of the company. Hence on the basis of his power he had finalized the location for companys news office. He had even signed a lease agreement with Bob but unfortunately when the lease agreement was emailed to the company then company refused to acknowledge the agreement. Company has taken a wrong decision in this case. When company have given an authority to its employee then i t cannot simply violate it. Even when a company does not like the decision which is taking by its employee then some action needs to be taken by the company against that employee. But due to the issue between the company and its employee, third party should not suffer. In this Bob is suffering due to this. When Tom has agreed to signed the lease agreement with Bob then it is companys duty to abide by the agreement. (Legallineca, 2016) This lease agreement is just like a contract between two parties. But her actual party has not signed a contract; instead actual party has assigned a person on its behalf who will deal in this contract. Now when the concerned person has signed the contract then it is duty of the original owner that it should abide by the contract. But company had refused to acknowledge the contract. Bob has the complete right to take action against the company since company has breached the contract. But here Tom is also at fault since he should have at least confirmed from the company before signing the contract. There was no confirmation taken by Tom from the company which was also not correct. So this case is an issue between the company and its employee. So because of their internal issue third party Bob should not suffer. The given case is very similar to the case of CB Cold Storage Pty Ltd v Morgan Street Investments Pty Ltd (Retail Tenancies) 2014 VCAT 773.(Bostongrpcomau, 2016) Conclusion: as per the given provisions of the Lease Act 2001 the company is at fault by refusing the acknowledge the lease agreement. This was an issue between a company and its employee so because of this Bob should not suffer. Bob has the complete right to take actions against the company since company had breached the contract. Company needs to compensate Bob for refusing to abide the agreement. Hence as per the provisions of the Leases Act, Bob has the complete right to take action against the company. 2. Issue: In the given case Anne and Kevin were in a de facto relationship. Anne used to order groceries from TPM supermarket where Kevin had a credit account. Whenever she used to purchase from the supermarket, amount was deducted from Kevins account. Issue was that Kevin had specifically told Anne not to order any expensive item from the market. But one day Anne had ordered an item amounting to $2,000 from a new store named as RPG shop where Kevin had a credit account. At the time of payment Kevin had refused to pay the amount and even refused to pay for any other further purchases even from TPN supermarket. Rule: as per Section 4AA of the Family Law Act 1975, a person will be in a de facto relationship with another person only in the following situations:(Austliieduau, 2016) Both the persons should not be legally married to each other. They should also not be related by any family relation. Apart from all the other relationships they have a relationship as a couple who is living together on a genuine domestic basis. As per this Act a de facto relationship is possible between two persons of different sexes and between two different persons of same sex. It is even possible when a person is legally married to someone else or in another de facto relationship.(Family court of australia, 2016) Application: it is mentioned in the assignment that both Anne and Kevin is in a de facto relationship. This means that both of them are staying together but not married to each other. For married couples it is very easy to prove that they are related to each other, but for the persons who are in de facto relation it is very difficult for them, to prove their relation. Such couples need to divulge their personal habits and sexual proclivities to satisfy the threshold requirements before consideration of their substantive claim for property and financial settlement. In this case we dont need to prove that Kevin and Anne are in de facto relation, instead we need to advice the two super market for non-receipt of payment. Now since both of them are in de facto relation both is liable for each other as per Family Law Act 1975. (Nswgovau, 2016)There was an agreement between them that Anne would order groceries from TPN Supermarket where Kevin had his credit account. Kevin would make the payment. But onc e when Anne had ordered a priced product Kevin refused to make the payment to RPG shop and to TPN market. Both the market owners have the right to take action against Kevin. Anne has breached the agreement which she had with Kevin. So, because Annes fault third party should not suffer. If one party has breached the terms of the agreement then action needs to be taken against the aggrieved party. But if third party is also involved in the case then such actions should be taken which should not affect the third party involved. But in this case TPN and RPG market were suffering. Hence the action taken by Kevin was not correct as per the Family Law Act 1975.( Aifsgovau, 2016) Conclusion: Kevin has the right to take legal action against her partner Anne but he cannot stop the payment of TPN and RPM shops. He should make the payment to both of them and then later on he should recover the amount from Anne. This conclusion was based on the decisions given in the case of Gissing v Sheffield and Jonah v White.(Dlapipercom, 2016) 3. Then the decisions taken by the agent would be considered as final An Agent is a person who is authorized by the principal to act on the principals behalf and under the control of principal. In many of the cases a contract is entered by an agent who is authorized to act on behalf of the principal. Agents generally have complete rights and control which a principal should have. A principal appoints an agent because they themselves are not expert in the field. So agents are being hired to act on behalf of their principal. If complete authority is not given to them then it would be difficult for them to take any decision. Every time principal will not be available, so many of the decisions have to be taken by the agent himself. But decisions taken should have a positive impact on principal.(Lawteachernet, 2016) To prove that an agent is acting on behalf of a principal, a principal must prove that agent acts for him and the agent must also accept the authority to act on it. An agent may also have implied authority. Such authority arises when an agent is placed in a particular position by his principal. In the case of Hely Hutchinson v Brayhead Ltd (1968) agent who was appointed had implied authority to make all the contracts that a manager in that position has. So, in such cases if these agents are authorized actually or with seals then the contracts can be made valid. But if they do not execute as per the principals requirements then contract can be voidable or invalid. In such cases agents have to take responsibility for the loss. So these are the reasons why contracts created by agents are also considered to be legal in law. It has to be considered as legal because most of the time agents are dealing with third parties on behalf of their pricncipal.(Us legal, inc, 2016) References Aifsgovau.(2016).Aifsgovau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://aifs.gov.au/cfca/sites/default/files/publication-documents/cfca-paper24.pdf Austliieduau.(2016).Austliieduau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/consol_act/lara2001233/s90.html Austliieduau.(2016).Austliieduau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/consol_act/lara2001233/s117.html Austliieduau.(2016).Austliieduau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/fla1975114/s4aa.html Actgovau.(2016).Actgovau.Retrieved16 September, 2016,from https://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/2003-20/current/pdf/2003-20.pdf Bostongrpcomau.(2016).Bostongrpcomau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.bostongrp.com.au/documents/court-and-vcat-tribunal-decisions/CB Cold Storage Pty Ltd v Morgan Street Investments Pty Ltd _Retail_ Tenancies_ [2014] VCAT 773.pdf Dlapipercom.(2016).DLA Piper.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.dlapiper.com/en/asiapacific/insights/publications/2014/03/avoiding-multimillion-dollar-liability Family court of australia.(2016).Familycourtgovau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.familycourt.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/fcoaweb/family-law-matters/separation-and-divorce/defacto-relationships Lawteachernet.(2016).Lawteachernet.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.lawteacher.net/free-law-essays/contract-law/contract-made-by-agents.php Legalvisioncomau.(2015).LegalVision.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://legalvision.com.au/breaking-a-commercial-lease-agreement Legallineca.(2016).Legal Line.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.legalline.ca/legal-answers/breaching-a-commercial-lease Nswgovau.(2016).Nswgovau.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://www.legalaid.nsw.gov.au/publications/factsheets-and-resources/what-happens-when-your-relationship-ends Us legal, inc.(2016).Uslegalcom.Retrieved5 September, 2016,from https://agency.uslegal.com/authority-of-agents

Evaluating a Movie Essay Example

Evaluating a Movie Essay One Saturday night, I went into the movie rental store looking for a real good movie. I was looking for a story of love, a story of a romance that has no limits. I love movies that have such beautiful plots that they make me forget all about my empty love life. However, I was shocked when the store clerk told me to rent Titanic in order to get this plot. I thought to myself, Is she crazy? Wasnt that the unsinkable ship that sank and killed over a thousand people? As crazy as it sounded, yes, Titanic was, no doubt, the movie I was looking for that night. In Titanic, the director, James Cameron, takes the story to a new level. A level that has never had a nation so interested in what happened on April 11, 1912. With the help of a good plot, characters, setting and the soundtrack, the story of the Titanic has fascinated many viewers. What is a movie without a good plot? The plot of this movie isnt one that we would expect. It centers on the love of two people. One of the characters is Jac k Dawson, (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is a poor, adventurous American boy on a voyage back to America. The other character is Rose Dewitt (Kate Winslet) who is traveling with her finance on the Titanic just for leisure. Rose is unhappy. She feels her soon-to-be husband doesnt understand her. On the day that she decides to kill herself, she meets Jack who convinces her not to take her life. From that day on, Rose and Jack become inseparable. It is when they realize the boat is about to sink, and they are going down with it, that the meaning of true love comes into play. Not only is this an amazing story of a tragic situation, but it is also one that shows the beauty of a budding relationship sustained by determination and loyalty in the midst of trials and tribulations. However good the plot, without characters to help bring the action to life, it is as good as nothing. The characters in Titanic played their roles very well. From actions to accents, everyone could tell the time period and the place in which the action occurred. The main characters were excellent actors. Every girl in America fell in love with Jack. Maybe it was because of his determining spirit or his passion for life. Whatever it was, James Cameron couldnt have chosen a better man than Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of Jack, a poor man with big dreams who was willing to stand the test of time to make his dreams come true and to leave every living soul with a definition of true love and responsibility. Who better than Kate Winslet to play the role of Rose, a mysterious and stubborn young girl, but in a positive kind of way! Kate does an awesome job of portraying Rose, a strong-willed woman who wanted what she wanted when she wanted it. This was not typically characteristic of women in 1912 when this tragic event took place. Cameron develops these characters throughout the movie as he pits them against a backdrop of a series of situations and circumstances. The setting of this story couldnt have b een more wonderful. While looking at the movie and seeing all those people aboard the beautiful ship, laughing and enjoying themselves, you almost forget that this boat will sink and kill most of them. And, what a sight it was! The details of the boat are just fantastic! It looks as if it is still sailing the waters as it did in 1912. I was personally impressed with the scenes of the ship before and after hitting the ice burg. Before the collision, we could see the beautiful chandeliers and expensive china in the first class sections. Also visible were the details of the rooms that Rose and her fiancà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½e slept in-the wonderful life of first class passengers. Then, not stopping there, the director reveals the living quarters of the third class passengers on the Titanic. The viewer sees the rooms with undecorated walls and the bunk beds they slept in. He even takes us into their leisure room where they go to enjoy themselves. Later, as the ship sinks, Cameron allows us to act ually see it fall apart and slowly submerge under water. He leaves the world in awe at the horrific sight of that fatal night. The soundtrack sets the mood for this entire event. As the passengers learn that they had stuck ice, the fact that they would all be dead in a matter of hours did not come across their minds. They still had the thought that they were traveling on the unsinkable ship. To show the feelings of the passengers, Cameron has the musicians play uplifting music. The music was so invigorating that it seemed that the passengers had not a care in the world. However, as time passes and the passengers became nervous as a result of their awareness of what is happening, the tempo of the music slowly changes from fast and uplifting to slow and dreary. This variation in music was used to signal that the passengers were no long happy and carefree but had given up any hope of being saved. For me, this was the saddest part of the movie-seeing so many people in such despair. We can better understand the written account, R. M. S. Titanic by Hanson W. Baldwin, by watching the movie, Titanic. In the historical account, Baldwin explains in great details the terrible tragedy of the Titanic. He tells the reader how the music changes as the passengers realize their fate. As descriptive as he is, though, he couldnt have captured the attention that movie attracts. Viewers are able to actually see the things Baldwin is trying to get us to visualize from his writing. No doubt, we get a clearer understanding of the events surrounding the demise of that unsinkable Titanic by watching the motion picture versionAll and all, Titanic is a marvelous film. Never before have I seen a movie that captures the facts of what really happened while adding dramatic twists to keep the viewers interested. Certainly, through the plot, characters, setting and soundtrack, the Titanic will forever remain a household name for many.Ladies, looking for that romantic movie that you just cant get your guy to take you to? Titanic is the perfect one! After he sees this fantastic film that is filled with love, romance and full force action, he will agree that Titanic can definitely go down in history as not only a devastating tragedy, but also a classic heart-warming love story.

Polands Syndrome essays

Polands Syndrome essays There is a rare and perplexing congenital condition known today as Polands Syndrome. This extremely unusual disorder that is present at birth falls very near and dear to my heart. I will explain in later paragraphs. An anatomy student by the name of Alfred Poland made the first documented observation in 1841 at Guys Hospital in London. Alfred Poland discovered this extraordinary and unexplored abnormality while dissecting the cadaver of a convict that was hung for murder. The description Alfred Poland first provided was that of a congenital thoracic anomalies involving the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor with additional abnormalities on the affected side of the body (ipsilateral) consisting of webbed or fused phalanges (syndactyly). The term Polands Syndactyly was used to describe this disorder until 1967 when Baudinne renamed it, Polands Syndrome. It was felt that the condition would be more accurate if referred to as a syndrome because there were many anomalies then just syndactyly. Today, the laymens definition of Polands Syndrome consists of a developmental disorder that is present at birth. It is characterized by the absence or underdevelopment of chest muscles (pectoralis major, pectoralis minor) and abnormally short, webbed fingers or absence of middle phalanges. Additional finding might include underdeveloped or absence of one nipple or breast on the affected side. More extreme cases exhibit upper underdeveloped ribs and or an abnormally short arm with underdeveloped forearm bones. Unfortunately the limitation of Polands Syndrome deformity doesnt always cease here. The medical society has documented isolated cases over the past 100 years of chest wall disfigurement, lung herniation and spine curvature. Abnormalities involving the clavicle, scapula, kidney, testes, heart and associated occurrences of leukemia were also o ...

Public Office And Private Lives Social Policy Essay

Public Office And Private Lives Social Policy Essay The development of the media and high speed information exchange brings private lives of public officials to public discussion. Transgress moral boundaries may damage public officials career, especially elected ones, severely. The growing attention to private lives among the population makes the topic more important for the social sciences. On one hand politicians use certain aspects of their ideal private lives in their election campaigns in order to gain popularity, on the other hand they require the right for privacy in the things that will affect their lives negatively. Interestingly, the level of public interest in private life varies in modern democracies. While USA citizens are interested in every aspects of public officials (mostly elected ones), and try to find relationship between officials job performance with his private life, Greek people seems to be less caring about private lives and prefer to focus on officials job performance only. The purpose of this paper is to exp lain level of public interest for private lives of politicians, its reasons, affect on politics the Greece and the USA comparatively. In the first section I will focus on the USA case, in the second on the Greece, in the third section I will give comparison of these two countries. The final section Privacy in USA In past three decades borders between private and public life of public figures in USA became more invisible; their private lives are brought to public discussion more often. Privacy in general considered as freedom from unauthorized intrusion: state of being let alone and able to keep certain esp. personal matters to oneself.( Merriam-Websters). Freedom from unauthorized intrusion may include media, police, and government and so on. Although to define hat is public is not that easy. According to Frederick Schauer in public issue individual preferences is not indulged, including a preference that information not to be disclosed(Frederick Schauer 2000, 294 ). In this case electors right to whether decision making public official is suitable for the job, and how his/her policies affect their lives. Having normal childhood, family, and friends seems indicator of good personality as well. Through the history there are several cases showing that public leaders having abused childhood, lea ders who treated their families in abusive ways used alike policies in their job. For example Hitlers abused childhood caused disaster for the world as Alise Millen said Hitler did not invent fascism; he found it, like so many of his contemporaries, prefigured in the totalitarian regime of his family (The Natural Child Project). Or another dictator, Joseph Stalin, also had abusive childhood, problems with his family. Stalins wife Nadejda Alilulayeva wife committed suicide in 1982 after he spoke her mind about Communist Party purges and the famine and was met by a flood of vulgar abuse from Stalin (Nyu York Times, April 14, 1988) and another member of his family, his son Joseph committed suicide in 1943. Today family images of politicians play very important in their career path and their successful marriages brings moral and softer image to them. Perhaps its not coincidence that British Prime Minister Gordon Browns workaholic, lonely man changed before becoming prime minister. He is not mentioned as lonely man but family man who loves his family. In USA situation is not that much different than most of the world, even politicians private lives are more exposed than other countries. While most of the politicians complain about insufficiency of privacy in their private lives, they use their private lives as a means of advertisement. Since USA presidential election of 1992 politicians started to publicize their private lives more and more. Public interest for private life increasing, people prefer more entertaining programs, the American electorate are regarded as fed up with Washington politicians, voter want people who arent political ( Newman, in Schauer 2003, 301,). Candidates private life scandals seemed very interesting topic for news programs. Perhaps Bill Clintons extramarital relationship with Monica Lewinsky was one of the biggest scandals in USA history which was on headlines of newspapers for years. Although Clinton was elected for office for the second time after the scandal, some of higher ranked officials, had to resign after scandals, Randall L. Tobias, Deputy Secretary of State, resigned a day after confirming his usage of Washington escort services. Although April 27, 2007 dated press release of the state department said that he was leaving for personal reasons. New York governor Eliot Spitzer who also accused having extramarital affair with prostitute resigned from his post after scandal. Before his resignation he made a brief public appearance during which he apologized for his behavior, and described it as a private matter. (New York Times, March 10, 2008). There might be several reasons for this increase, but probably the most important two reasons which is decrease of interest to real politics as mentioned above peoples being fed up with Washington politicians (Schauer 2003, 301) and media which always tries to meet popular demand. In the last elections in USA candidate Barack Obamas race, family, religion was discussed and much as his election platform. Today media is considered as one of most profit bringing areas in the world. In the competitive market companies are working to maximize their profits at any price. American media is called as freest and most commercial media in the world by Heather Savigny (2004, 225). Privacy in Greece Discussions about privacy and public life are not something new for Greece. In ancient Greece private lives and public were separated from each others, private life was called oikos and public life was called as dimos. In Platos Republic Plato and Socrates discuss privacy issue. After reviewing Greek newspapers headlines in last 25 years one might thing that Greeks might seem not to be interested in oikos of politicians after over than 2000 years from Socrates times or Greeks are not interested in politics at all or having politicians who has very ideal life without any scandals, so that there are only two well known publicized high ranked public officials scandals. Both of these scandals have very similar feature. In the first case Andreas Papandreou, while receiving hospital treatment in London, was accompanied by a former air hostess, Ms. Dimitra Liani rather than with his wife, even friendly press gave the fact widespread publicity. Later, he was constantly seen with Ms. Liani, most notable on his return to Greece from London, In Autumn 1988 and at the EC Summit in Rhodes in December of that year. (Georgia Chondreleou 2004,5,) However this case was not revealed by journalists or someone else but Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou himself let rumors to be spread. Greek prime ministers confident action also indicates that he is not that much concerned about critiques and media pressure. Indeed this case was not discussed in the media that much, so that his health and later on corruption scandals overshadowed this case. In the Second case: Christos Zachopoulos, the former secretary general of the Greek Culture Ministry and chairman of the Central Archaeological Council, jumped off the balcony of his fourth-floor home here [December 20, 2007]after allegations that he was being blackmailed by his former office assistant, with whom he had had an affair. Mr. Zachopoulos, 54, survived the fall. (New York Times December 20, 2007) This scandals also mentioned as The juiciest sex scandal in modern Greek memory (Times Online January 9, 2008) Comparatively with the first case in the second case General Secretary of the Greek culture get more attention from the media. Perhaps, the thing that forced General Secretary to resign and attempt for the suicide was not only related publication of his love affair in the media, but also his being accused for corruption. An Athens prosecutor [was] also examining at least 10 of an estimated 200 cases in which Mr. Zachopoulos, in his capacity as the head of the Central Archaeological Council, decreed that places could be removed from the list of protected archaeological sites. (New York Times, January 19, 2008). Having only two politician private life scandal in Greece also doesnt means that Greek people are not interested in politics. Politics is still one of the most famous topics in Greek Coffee Shops. But its also known that population get information what media gives. Although there was freedom of speech in media, since the beginning of the 1980s ruling parties always had impact on TVs, so that most the TVs and big newspapers either belonged to the government or survived with the subsidies from the government. Even today from time to time Greek governments subsidize media. Perhaps it is not coincidence that there is not that much critique in media against government and high ranked officials except the cases which officials exposed them or the cases which is already related with some ethical issues. Comparison Even if this two countries seems very similar in some points there differences in public attention to their life. However political scandals take place only in liberal democracies because only there is the separation of public from private spheres fundamental to the political system (Markovitsa nd Silverstei in Betty a. Dobratz and Whitfield, Stephanie 1992, 168). Perhaps the level of the liberalization and Greeks being under dictatorship was also one of the factors that affect level of scandals. Platos Republic abolishes the foundation of any private life for the guardians who the ideal state-eliminating the family and private property in order to create unity in the state. Socrates considers the objection that guardians will not be happy if they have to give up pleasures of the private life. Such happiness he replies is senseless and childish; the guardians, after all, will enjoy a better and more honorable life than other citizens. Anyhow, the aim should be to make whole society good, not to make one section of it happy, he also argues that even if guardians will have to give up their private lives, they will still enjoy a better honorable life.'(Platos Republic in Thompson 1987, 124). If we compare USA and Greece with Plato and Socrates philosophy, Platos model private and public life is very suitable USA approach of privacy so that politicians seems to be ok giving up their privacy in order to enjoy a better honorable life. However Greece politicians still can manage to keep their private lives from public. The main difference in the cases of two countries is that USA population will get more However media also played significant role in publicizing the cases. Free and commercialized USA media seems is more likely to meet entertain popular demand of population that the media and press which is subsidized by government. Conclusion Its obvious that there are still will be a lot of debates about public and private lives. As much country will get liberalized, achieve free media, References: Frederics Schauer 2000, Can Public Figures have private lives? Social Philosophy and Policy, 17:299-306 Dennis F. The Gifts of the Jews Catholic author thanks Jews for Western values Review by April Witt for Miami Herald Published: Tuesday, April 14, 1998, If not for the Jews, no one would know to love justice, yearn for freedom, struggle for faith in one God or hope for a tomorrow better than today. Jews helped invent Western culture and without Jewish ideas and values there would be no civil rights movement, democracy or even history. That's the central, sweeping premise of The Gifts of the Jews, the latest book by Roman Catholic scholar and best-selling author Thomas Cahill. ''The Jews gave us the Outside and the Inside -- our outlook and our inner life,'' writes Cahill, who will be at Temple Judea in Coral Gables tonight to talk about the book. ''We can hardly get up in the morning or cross the street without being Jewish. We dream Jewish dreams and hope Jewish hopes. Most of our best words, in fact -- new, adventure, surprise; unique, individual, person, vocation; time, history, future; freedom, program, spirit; faith, hope, just -- are the gifts of the Jews.'' Cahill, 58, has his own gift: making history accessible, even compelling to a mass culture largely ignorant of its patrimony. His last book, How the Irish Saved Civilization, was a New York Times bestseller for more than a year and a half. The Gifts of the Jews, the second in a planned series, climbs onto the list next week. ''I tell history as a story and people love stories,'' Cahill said in ...

Impact of American Media on Caribbean Culture

Stewart-Andre Wilkinson 409001306 Impact of American media on Caribbean media culture and music Rap, Hip Hop, Pop, Fashion; all these are areas in which the culture of North America has influenced the culture in the Caribbean. To be able to determine the full extent to which American culture affects the Caribbean, we must first define what Caribbean culture is. In its broadest definition it is the actions and way of life practiced by the people who live amongst the islands of the Caribbean Sea that stretch from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana in the south. Caribbean culture as the result of the violent mixture of indigenous people from Quisqueya, Xaymaca, Borinquen and Cuba, European immigrants who invaded these territories and African slaves brought to work in the gold mines, sugar plantations and sugar mills† (Wilson 1998). The culture of the Caribbean has been developing over centuries and due to its dynamic nature it changes with the presence of external pressures. The l argest external force affecting Caribbean culture is in the form of North America; the main instrument used to cause this influence is the media.Although America’s impact is diverse, one of the major impacts it has is on the media culture and music in the Caribbean. This article will discuss how American media has affected the local media in Caribbean territories and the music industry in the region in three main ways: 1. The change in popular music in the Caribbean; 2. Treatment of local celebrities versus foreign celebrities. 3. Impact on Carnivals and television. The first major impact that American media has had on the region is on the perception of popular music. In the past reggae and calypso were the music genres of choice and the many songs produced could be heard regularly on the radios. Reggae originated in Jamaica but has found its way throughout the region so that the popular songs were sung by everyone. Calypso music which came out of Trinidad was heard throughout the region; popular artist such as The Mighty Sparrow were well known throughout the Caribbean. This is not to suggest that there was no music which came from America, because they were several popular groups and songs which originated from the United States, such as The Platters, The Drifters and The Temptations. What is noteworthy is that these songs were still popular but they would never be heard more than the local or regional music. This ratio is much different than what is heard today. â€Å"Hip hop and Top 40 tunes stream from radios as much, if not more than Soca, calypso and reggae. † (Cummings-Yeates, 2000). This can be clearly seen in the amount of airtime that the respective genres are played on the radio. Calypso is only heard in high quantities around the time of Crop Over in Barbados; reggae is heard in small amounts as is the genre of dub.In contrast to these is the fixation on American music such as Pop which is at the moment the most popular genre of music. Turn on the radio at any given time to the most popular on radio stations and you are probably going to hear music originating from the United States. There is a notion that since it comes from America the standard must be of the highest quality. Within the songs of local artists, this notion of America being the standard can be seen; their voices as well as the melody of the songs follow the pattern which is set by the United States, there is hardly any resemblance of the local customs or traits. The second impact that is observed is how local celebrities are treated in contrast to international celebrities. There is an old saying, â€Å"A king is never welcomed in his own kingdom†; this has proven true for local celebrities within the region, especially in Barbados. Local singers and actors are viewed as amateurs; this is also related to the notion of American music and film being the benchmark. â€Å"Young people idolize celebrities from ‘foreign’ more than t heir own, homegrown role models† (Cummings-Yeates, 2000).This idolizing can have a grave impact on the youth of the region. Multiple studies in Trinidad found that â€Å"The more hours Trinidadian female adolescents spent watching American sitcoms, the less satisfied they are with their body image†¦(and) also resulted in the increase in the adolescents? awareness and internalization of the American norms and expectations for thinness, as well as the pressures to adopt those norms and expectations† (Ferguson, 2011). This behavior is not shown towards local celebrities; they are seen as being no better than the other locals. On the contrary the foreign celebrities are idolized and imitated. Thirdly, the impact that America has on the various cultured festivals or carnivals is uncanny. This impact can be directly related to the importance of tourism in the region. The respective festivals within the region usually had some cultural or traditional significance to it. In Barbados for example, the festival of Crop Over had with it the Queen and King of the Harvest, these were main attractions of the festival; there were other traditional practices which had its roots in colonial days. With the switch to tourism as main source of foreign exchange for the country, the festival had to become more marketable for tourists. As a result the traditional features of the festival were no longer the focal point but rather the women and dancing of Kadooment. An example of this is the sidelining of calypso with it social commentary in favor of the more catchy Soca. Advertising on American are somewhat to blame for this because they don’t advertise the cultural side of the festival but only the sexual aspect which appeals to prospective tourists. On one hand there is the changing of the traditional festival but on the other hand there is also the introduction of new festivals from the United States which is bigger than the traditional festival. These include the materially-driven festival, Christmas as well as Easter, Father’s and Mother’s day. They are celebrated in the same fashion and characterized by the same extent of commercialism as in developed societies. It is the commercial aspect of the celebrations that marks the degree of Western influence. Finally another impact seen is through the domination of television which originates in America. Caribbean residents have become exposed to this culture difference through â€Å"the pervasive commoditization and consumption of the United States way of life via cable television and other instruments† (Baptiste, 1988). As stated by Baptiste the television has been one of the major instruments used; various shows and programs from the United States are shown. This can be contrasted to the lack of local programs that are aired. In conclusion then the impact that America has had on Caribbean media is immense. It is clear that through the popularity of the music that we lis ten to as well as how we treat our local celebrities in comparison to how we idolize the foreign celebrities that this is the case. The changes in the various Carnivals that are celebrated around the region give another testament to this. There was a change in the traditional Carnival to make it more marketable to the tourists as well as the influx of festivals from outside of the region which have become larger than traditional festivals. The change in the media coverage has also been a major impact on the region. References 1.Wilson, Carlos Guillermo. 1998. â€Å" Uprooted†. pp 43 2. Cummings- Yeates, Rosalind. 2000.
